As planned I left my hometown Pontian to Mersing for the fishing trip, the schedule was delayed as I spent a total of two days at my parent's home doing some chores, on top of that I spent some times to do some shopping.

The day was 6th June 2015 Saturday and at 2:50pm I left Pontian. The rain had just stopped and the sky gradually clears up. Before I set off to Mersing I did some studies based on the Google Map to help me figured out the shortest route. It showed that the Simpang Renggam - Ayer Hitam way is the best and I followed although I was a bit reluctant to. This is due to that route has to pass by Kluang and the journey from Ayer Hitam to Mersing via Jalan Mersing is a killer! The narrow and winding two way lane claimed many lives as I heard. As the matter of fact I did this once in 2008, back then I was still an inexperience driver on Malaysia road. I remembered that it was a raining day and my car's tires was 40% worn. Throughout the whole journey I could feel the moist on both of my hands and feet. I was quite confused as well and I lost my way a couple of times.

After stopping by at a Fishing Tackle Shop cum Pet Shop cum Aquarium Shop to get some worms, I began the journey northward. The starting point was en-routing Jalan Pontian towards Batu Pahat direction and halfway through I needed to cut through this small town called Ayer Baloi. From here I continued for some distance on the Jalan Parit Raja and then I got into Jalan Parit Makorsa which at the cross junction I continued onto Jalan Parit Ismail. At the end of that road I drove onto Jalan Besar which leading towards Simpang Rengam.

From the beginning of the journey on a few occasion I nearly made the wrong turn, fortunately the mistakes were amended earlier and I was able to arrive at Simpang Renggam without burning off extra gasoline. The rain resumed somewhere on the journey here, one glance at the sky it didn't seems like it was going to stop anytime soon.

Simpang Renggam is formed by four town of Renggam, Machap, Layang-Layang and Simpang Renggam itself, the major trade here is plantation and Pineapple is the main product produced. Among the four town, Renggam was made famous when the British Queen Elizabeth II visited the place in the 1950s.

From here I was supposed to make a turn onto Jalan Batu Pahat and proceeded towards Kluang. Somehow or rather I made a wrong turn and I ended up at this small little old town named Renggam. At that time i wasn't aware about the history of this place but I was attracted by the peaceful and quiet environment.

I decided to make a stop here and explored the town on foot. Everything looks old including the buses, I found a Train Station and took some photos. This old town preserved most of the original look from the past, it made me felt like I was walking into the 1970's.

Next in part 4 I returned onto the right track and came upon a new highway which offers stunning scenery, stay tuned!

Before I left for Mersing for the fishing trip I had to help my parent to do some chores. So on the second day I arrived at my hometown Pontian, I went out to pay some bills in the afternoon and after the mission accomplished I went on to search for my lunch.

The place I went for my lunch is the new town central, it is created from a plot of reclaimed land and after many years of development, it is now replaced the old town central, the Jalan Taib. Many shops set up at this new town central here and some newer projects are on going when I was there.

Pontian Kechil which is the town where I was born is located at 1°29'05.2"N 103°23'23.7"E. A small town whereby the livelihood of the residents here are very much depend on the fishing at the Straits of Malacca. The Kukup which's a small fishing village produce some of the best seafood that attracted many seafood lovers to visit the town, mainly from Singapore due to the geographical location which's only 62km from Johor Bahru. Travelers who wish to visit Kukup will have to pass by Pontian Kechil and most of them would stop by and pay a visit to Pontian Kechil and this made my hometown bloomed.

I stop by at the seaside as I searching for my lunch and enjoyed the beautiful scenery of Pontian Kechil. I recalled those days when I was a carefree little boy who roaming around with my bicycle with my gangs, I remembered once I walked almost one kilometer out towards the sea on the mud, I remembered the old fashioned playground which was built using concrete, I went back to the Chicken Rice Restaurant that I had the chicken rice since I was seven years old, I passed by my primary school... Those were the days.

After my lunch I went to check out a fishing tackle shop here, I was looking for some big pyramid shape sinkers for my Bait Launcher. I intended to stick to the formula that has proven to be workable, the frozen bait bullet. The shopkeepers here gave me some stone cold faces and their mono tone voice turned me off, initially I though of recording some video here but.... Anyway, I got what I wanted from that shop. Although it is not the pyramid shape that I was looking for. I went on to search for the Spark Plug for the Hangkai 3.5hp Outboard Motor, I was told by many shops that this Spark Plug is quite unique and it is hard to find here. Devastated but I didn't give up, more shops were visited and this included Hardware Stores, Machinery Stores and so on. Finally I barged into this half closed Motorcycle Workshop, it was around 7pm and I found the identical Spark Plug for the Hangkai.

I decided to stay at my hometown for another night and the next day after some more rigging at my parent's home I set off to Mersing. At Pontian Besar I dropped by a Aquarium cum Pet Shop cum Fishing Tackle Shop to get some worms as bait, I bought some Umpun aka Pun-Pun or Sarong and some Wawat.

I traveled via the route that cut through the center part of Johor state and I came across a few beautiful places which will be featured in the next video. I had use this route in the year of 2006 and after almost 10 years I did it twice in a month!

Stay tuned for the part 3 which I traveled from Pontian to Mersing via the Ayer Baloi - Simpan Rengam - Rengam - Kluang - Kahang - Mersing route which cut through the center of Johor state.

During the June school holiday I decided to make a fishing trip to my all time favorite fishing spot at Malaysia, the Pantai Air Papan. My plan was to spend a few days there with all my new and old toy.

This trip had two purposes as I got a Call of Duty from my dad to help him look after his house during his holiday trip to England, I was told to check out the house once in a week as well as to check on the mailbox and pay bills if there's any. On my second hometown visiting I brought along literally all my fishing toys, I intended to spend a night at my parent's house and heading to Mersing on the next day. So off I go onto the journey back to my birth place, my hometown, Pontian, which's located at the state of Johor, West Malaysia.

Pontian is a fishing province and it is situated at the west coast of Malaysia, facing the Straits of Malacca this town offers some great seafood that attracts many seafood lovers came all the way here, this includes Singaporean. Not far away from the town there is this famous seafood town named Kukup, most part of the houses here are build on the sea and many good seafood restaurants can be found here, it also attracts many tourist to visit, namely Singaporean.

The journey back home is around 40 minutes drive during the wee hours, which is also my favorite travelling hour. It used to be a two hours driving on this winding and narrow old route. I took my time and had my supper cum breakfast at Johor Bahru, at around 6:30am I reached Pontian.

After inspection of the house was done, I found a few bills and a light bulb went burst. I took the ladder and replaced the light bulb, I also help to do some cleaning up on the house. As soon as it was done I was too tired to continue in any activity, had my shower and headed to bed.

I slept throughout the day and woke up in the evening. Took my dinner at a nearby Coffee Shop and went back to my parent's house to do some preparation for the up-coming fishing trip. I tied a few rigs and did some final checking on my Hangkai 3.5hp Outboard Motor, this was to ensure that it didn't breakdown in the middle of the sea. Everything seemed fine except I was not please with the Spark Plug and I figured I could get one in local Auto Spare Parts Shop. As it was approaching midnight and I began to feel hungry I decided to call it a day. Went out to a 24/7 Coffee shop to have my supper and I returned for more beauty sleep.

In part 2, I woke up earlier on the next day, I went to pay the bills and check out a local tackle store, a small tour around of Pontian was made.

The distance from Kijal to Kuala Terengganu is around 160 km. After spending almost three hours on the Kijal Jetty I left the place at 12:30am and by 3am me and my car were already beside the Kuala Terengganu Airport.

I was exhausted from the drive so I decided to call it a day. This Kuala Terengganu Airport was built on a plot of reclaimed land, from the Google Map view this place is shaded into a semi-circle with the coastal highway circled around it. At the both side of the airport there were some empty plots, these area might be reserved for some future developments. Without much consideration I drove off from the highway and parked my car at the middle of this plot, within minutes I was heading to my dreamland.

The highlighted Star marking was where I spent my first night at Kuala Terengganu. I was having a five star accommodation here at this quiet and peaceful night. With sea breeze gently stroking on me, soft and calm wave created a constant rhythm which resemble lullaby, I didn't have to count the zillion stars that are hanging on the dark sky as I was quick fallen into deep sleep.

I woke up at around 7am and with this much needed four hours rest I was re-energized. I drove off from the place and found a public toilet along the beach. Done my brush up there and I returned to the Kuala Terengganu Airport.

I had made this spot a place to visit while planning for the trip back home, the reason behind was from some articles that I read sometimes back. Anglers reported sizable catch here and according to them, some man-made breeding ground were constructed by the local fishermen around 200 meter from the shore. They were saying that with the help of long surf casting fishing rod and skill, they were able to cast their baits near to that breeding ground. Ikan Gelama or Red Bream weighing three kilogram was caught!

As usual the first beverage of the day was made, the "Renggit White Coffee". After having some bread which I bought at the Taman Seri Geliga Supermarket for breakfast I was ready to go.

The spot was surrounded by tall water breaker, it is around ten feet tall. I bet the wave during the year end North Eastern Monsoon season must be very strong. Due to this tall breaker I decided to go on the light gear mode, but... I ended up with three surf rods and a bunch of other accessories to carry.

The wind was not very strong and the sea was quite calm, I made it to the top of the water breaker and decided to settle down at this spot. Dark cloud started to gather over at the far end, it was around 9am and I was all ready for the big game.

Every fishing trip I went be it somewhere near to my house in Singapore or as far as here in Terengganu, which is around 600km from home! I will never left my old pal at home, the Loomis & Franklin 10 footer Surf Rod which has been with me since 1996. So I set it up and paired it with my another piece of antique reel, the Shiman Aero Symetre 4000 spinning reel. I am always a fan of surf casting since the day I started this amazing sport, using a bottom feeder rig with a 125 gram sinker, I sent my sinker and the bait flying far into the South China Sea.

It was a fine morning with warm sunlight beaming across this piece of Earth here, I sat down on the beach chair that I brought up here, lit up a cigarette and enjoyed the peaceful moment. Staring at my rod for any action I noticed that my fishing line remained tight, it didn't drift from the spot at all. Most of the time when we surf casting from the shore, the sinker tends to drift when the current strikes and when the current gets stronger, we would switch the normal sinker into a grip sinker. Hmm.. probably the current was weak at that moment I thought.

Decided to set up another fishing rod to increase the changes, I took out the Pioneer 13 footer and paired it with the Abu Garcia C4 6600, same type of rig was used with same type of bait. This Pioneer and Abu paired is capable of reaching 150 meter of the casting distance and it could be increased if Pendulum Casting was used. The spot didn't allow me to have a full Pendulum swing and I had to settle for the more humble Ground Cast.

Patient is the keyword in the game of fishing sport, I admitted I lacked this key component quite a bit. As soon I placed the Pioneer fishing rod onto the rod holder, I went up to the Loomis & Franklin and upon seeing no movement on the rod tip, I figured that it was time to reel back and checked if the bait was still intact.

I lifted up my fishing rod and as usual gave it a hard pull, this is to ensure that if there is any silent strike by the fish, this action will set the hook onto the lip.

    "Damn!" I yelled

It was snagged! No wonder my fishing line remained straight and tight all time, it also explained why the sinker wasn't drifted as well. Spent 15 minutes using various tactics like walking from left to right while reeling in, stretching the fishing line to full tension and quickly releasing it. Finally I had to break the fishing line.

I had to retie the shock leader and another set of rig was putted on. I shifted to another spot and cast it back into the sea. It wasn't long before I found out that the Pioneer 13 footer suffered the same fate and the fishing line had to be broke off as well. I was quite devastated and decided not to retie this Pioneer 13 footer. Went back to my seat and decided to wait for the Loomis & Franklin to have some action.

By now I had figured out that this is a spot where anglers named it "Sangkut Heaven" or Snagged Heaven. The reclaimed work might had extended out far in order to give this place a strong foundation. I had seen this on documentary film about land reclamation, tons of small and huge rocks will be dumped onto the seabed and if the area is located on the soft land, this rock refilling work might go on for several miles out towards the sea. Judging from this tall water breaker and the vast empty plot surrounding this airport, I believed that the wave factor during the monsoon season might play a part for causing this extreme reclamation work. Thus turning this supposedly fishing heaven into a fishing nightmare.

It was approaching 11am, I sat on the beach chair staring motionless on the sea, anger couple with disappointment I recapped the losses. Over the past two hours I lost three size four 125 gram sinkers and two size three 90 gram sinkers, a total of fifty meter of my Surecatch 40 lb Shock Leader was buried deep under the sea, five sets of swivels, snap swivels and Mustad size 0/3 J hooks were vanished as well. As I looked into my tackle box suddenly it felt empty. Oh Man! I might ended up with a empty tackle box if I continued.

I packed my stuff and climb down from the water breaker, this was not my day, I told myself. Left this "Sorrow Land" and headed for lunch, I drove back towards the beach where some restaurant were spotted when I did my brush up in the morning.

All the restaurants or eatery here were offering Malay food and when I was indecisive on which shop to visit, the once familiar logo popped out in front of me. During my schooling day the A&W was one of my favorite hangout spot after school, the Root Bear Float was a must have item! Too bad the American Fast Food chain decided to pull the plug in 2003 and left Singapore for good. Many youngster nowadays don't even know the name, had shown my daughters how I enjoyed the food there and they asked me why they never see or hear about A&W in Singapore.

Ordered a Original Bacon Cheesburger set meal, added a set of chicken wings for sidedish. I opted out of the Root Beer Float as I had to admit that I am no longer a teenager now.

The A&W Restaurant is located next to this beach, Pantai Batu Buruk. After the delicious meal I strolled on to the beach and found some kite seller there. Bought a huge Dragon shape kite and two small Diamond shape kites and it only cost me Malaysia Ringgit $30!

I ventured on to discover many beautiful places along this beautiful Terengganu coast line. As always I love to roam around while on the fishing trip and I stopped by at a few places to take some nice photos.

Came upon this housing estate which is built next to the beach, i guessed this is what we called it a beach front property? As i walked down to the beach I found that the beach was quite narrow and steep, high wave could be spotted and there were some tall sand bar along the beach. I couldn't imaging how was it felt like to sleep in this property during the monsoon season.

As I roamed around I saw this humongous Semi Circle Water Breaker and I didn't stop my car from going up onto the water breaker. The star marking is where I was during that time, I didn't drive till the edge as I afraid that I might got stuck if there was another vehicle coming in.

The width of the path here is around six feet wide, which is just nice for a medium size vehicle like my car to went through. I stopped my car on the breaker and climbed up to the edge, the view here was spectacular. No fishing in mind though as this place reminded of the morning disaster.

According to the Nokia GPS Guided Map on my Nokia C6 cellphone, it measured 548 km from where I was to my home in Singapore.

My journey continued again after some exploring and sight seeing. My next destination was towards the South as I would be visiting a town that I bypassed on the way here, the Rantau Abang.

The once famous Home for the Greenback Turtles is loosing it's glorious day. It is attracting lesser and lesser tourist as a result from the no show of the Greenback Turtles. Poor management plays a big part in this failure, as you can see from the photo of that symbolic huge signboard whereby the wordings were disappearing. Poachers aggressively collecting turtles eggs openly and selling them for profits, although law was implemented with hefty fine imposed on those who were caught. Inconsiderate tourist that intimidating the turtle by sitting on it for a photo shoot, all this chased away the Greenback Turtle and had made this place downgraded to a mere resting stop for long journey coaches the went up north.

For anglers this news was not really that bad as we know that fishes will begin to frequent this area more, the disappearing of the Greenback Turtles is welcomed by most anglers. Huge Stingray was caught here more often and that's why I choose my last destination here.

According to these two anglers just a few days ago someone landed a 40 kg Stingray at this place. I wasn't in the hurry and I was a bit tired from another long drive, decided to have a rest in my car for an hour to recharge my battery.

I woke up at around 8pm and straight away I started to set up the pair, Loomis & Franklin 10 footer and Pioneer 13 footer, I was still using the squid that I brought from home as bait. Fast forwarded to 10pm, I didn't manage to have a single action on my both fishing rods. Haiz... lady luck wasn't smiling at me on that day.

I started to packed up as I figured that it's time to put a full stop for the trip, I had left my home for almost four days and I began to miss my family. It's a long way home from here but I wasn't deterred by it and even though nothing was caught on this trip, I enjoyed the whole process which gave me a short break away from the daily working city life. I returned to the Kijal Jetty again in 2013 which is featured in the other post.

Finally, I reached the Kijal Jetty, a great fishing spot that I first discovered in 2011 trip. I had traveled almost six hundred kilometer in distance over the last two days and crossing through many towns over three states of Malaysia. Along the journey I took a few breaks and a failed attempt on the Kite Fishing at Chendor, Pahang due to the weak wind.

Although I had came here knowing that the weather was going to be rough, I didn't anticipate that it was this worst. When me and my car inched closer to the jetty, the roaring of the rough wave could be heard from miles away. Droplets were visible on the car windscreen and it was mixed with some fine sands, it caused some squeaking sound when the wipers were trying hard to sweep them away. I could feel that my car was facing some resistance and I had to accelerate slightly. Pacy wind penetrated through my opened car windows and it was moisten, it forcing me to wind up the car windows as I do not want my car's upholstery to get damped.

Extra effort was needed to push open my car's door as this mighty strong monsoon wind was trying to stop me from getting out. The thundering sound of the wave was getting louder as I walked towards the jetty, the attempt by the Mother Nature to intimidate me from getting up close was failed. I got more excited and was eager to find out how was it felt on the jetty.

When I first visited this place in 2011 I was told by a ranger (he claimed) that the beach behind those wooden fences was restricted to the public, he told me it's a protected area for the Greenback Turtles. In the later date I found out that this is not a protected area for the turtles, it is under the management of the Awana Kijal Resort and it is open only for their guests. The resort is situated at the far end of the beach.

As I stepped on to the jetty, trembling could be felt from my feet. The assault of the mighty wave seems like wanting to tear this jetty apart, it pounded as hard as it could to the jetty, splashing up sea water onto it and I bet that it was just the matter of time for this jetty to surrender to this onslaught.

The wave retreated to the South China Sea almost simultaneously after the kinetic force was transferred onto the beach, it left behind a layer of white foamy air bubbles on the surface of the sea. The bashing of the wave pushed the sands to the higher ground and at the same time brought back some back to the sea. In the process, beach worms that were hidden underneath the sand were dug out and dragged into the sea where bunch of eagerly waiting hungry predators would swallow them in split second.

This scene was unthinkable when I was here in 2011, back then the sea was calm and clear, sunny through the whole day. The ironic part is when I did the third long distance trip to here on the same month in 2013, a combination of two scenario which was rough on the first day and completely calm on the next. I used to hear some fishermen mentioned how unpredictable the ocean is, especially this South China Sea and I couldn't agree more as I myself had encountered this sudden change of weather and sea condition over my past fishing journey. In recent day I began to do some fishing with my newly acquired Intex Seahawk II Inflatable Boat, I was forced to retreat at many occasion as the sea condition turned with the blink of the eyes.

I was not alone here as these local boys came onto the jetty with their motorcycles. I figured that I should approach them for some information about this place.

"Hi! You guys are locals?" I walked over to them and asked

"Ya! Bang.(Brother) We are from nearby village." They smiled at me

"Bang, why you come here?" They seems curious to see me alone here, especially a Chinese guy.

"Was planning to do some fishing here, but the condition seems quite bad." I told them

"Ya, we fish here as well. But today doesn't seems like a good day, we are quite surprise by this rough condition as well." One of the slim boy said

"Bang, you should come here during the June to September season, it is the Squid season and hundred of thousands of squids can be spotted around here. During that period of time many good fishes will come close for the squid." He continued

"Ya, Bang, I caught a Giant Trevalley last season, weighing fifteen kilogram! I fought with it for almost two hours!" Another boy added.

Great information! I should change the timing of coming here next year. I was a bit skeptical about the Giant Trevally could be caught here at that moment. As the matter of fact, recently I did read some post on the social media that many Giant Trevallys were caught around this area here, maybe...

The gang left the jetty for dinner and I went up to the edge of the jetty to enjoy this rare encounter with the Mother Nature.

During the third visit here in 2013 I saw anglers walked over to that small platform, they were jigging for the Yellowtail Scad which came in groups. Tons of them were hooked up but I didn't join in the fun as that small platform was crowded with five anglers.

I went back to my car and decided to have another rest and hope that the sea might be calmer when I was awaken. At around 9pm and I woke up surrounded by the darkness. With the help of my portable stove and portable lamp I made myself a cup of "Renggit White Coffee", I needed this to stay awake for the night fishing.

It was extremely quiet comparing to just now, the sea was calmer and the wind had slowed down. After the coffee break I set up my Loomis & Franklin 10 footer fishing rod and paired with the Shimano Aero Symetre 4000 Spinning Reel, the rig used was a bottom feeder rig with a size 3/0 J-Hook. I hooked up the frozen squid that I bought from the NTUC Supermarket in Singapore and tossed it into the South China Sea from the jetty.

It was five minutes to twelve o'clock, it started to get windy and the sea became choppy, wave started to swell higher and eventually splashing up the sea water onto the jetty. I was a bit reluctant to leave the place as this seems like the perfect moment of hooking up some biggies, I hung on although I was drenched by the splashing sea water. But soon after I was forced to pack up as I began to feel the trembling of the jetty, it was pretty scaring as I only had a head lamp in this pitch dark atmosphere, I couldn't see anything that was coming from the sea and an unnoticed huge wave could just swept me into the sea.

Returned to my car and got myself changed into a new set of clothing, it was around 12:30am and I left the Kijal jetty towards my next destination, Kuala Terengganu.
